Twitter, Yandex Partnership Will Allow Russian Search Engine To Show Tweets In Search Results

By Georgina Prodhan
LONDON (Reuters) - Twitter and Russian search engine Yandex have agreed a partnership that will allow Yandex to show new tweets in its search results almost instantly, as Twitter becomes an increasingly important source of real-time information.
Twitter will give Yandex access to its so-called firehose of all public tweets, the two companies said on Tuesday, in an agreement similar to the one the social short-messaging site has with Microsoft's search engine, Bing.
"We wanted to make sure that Twitter content can be where Twitter users are already going," Twitter's director of business development, April Underwood, told Reuters by phone. "Discovery through search is so important."
Anton Pavlov, Yandex's blog search manager, said in a statement: "People share news, exchange opinions and discuss all sorts of matters in real-time all the time. This kind of information will help us enhance our search results."
Yandex has about 60 percent market share in Russia, ahead of Google with about a quarter of the market, although global leader Google has recently begun to erode its lead.
Google no longer partners with Twitter, favoring its own fledgling Google+ social network for social search results.
Asked about a possible renewal of a partnership with Google, Twitter's Underwood said: "Anything's possible, but there's not really an update to provide there at this time."
Twitter has more than 100 million active users and 400 million visitors per month. Its valuation tops $8 billion, even though it has not yet established a money-making model.
Google+, which is more akin to Facebook than Twitter, has 90 million users.
Twitter and Yandex declined to give financial details of their agreement. Microsoft has been reported to have paid $30 million for its deal with Twitter.
Yandex reaches about 2.8 percent of global Internet users, according to Web metrics firm Alexa, while Bing reaches about 3.4 percent.

All You Need to Know About Investing in Whiskey | MintLife Blog ...

People keen to grow their income typically turn to equities, hoping to make a killing through studying the market and making the appropriate moves. The trouble, however, is that the market is vast and unpredictable. Consider the?Dow Jones Index?and the?S&P 500, two broad barometers of the state of the equities market. After a year full of spectacular climbs and gut-wrenching plunges, the Dow ended 2011 up a teeny 5.5% while the S&P 500 basically stayed flat. In other words, a year full of sound and fury signifying nothing, as Shakespeare would say.

If you?re tired of the volatility of the stock market but want to do something with your money besides parking it in a bank or under your mattress, perhaps you could turn to?investing in whiskey.

Yes, while the market for fine wines is already saturated, the one for precious whiskeys is still expanding energetically. Four years ago, 1,500 bottles of single malt ? the most valuable form of whiskey ? were sold at auctions. Last year, the figure grew to 8,500. The value of the auction market, currently at about $5.7 million, is predicted to rise to some $27 million by 2020.

More importantly, whiskeys also have the potential to provide tantalizing returns. If you had invested in the 100 best-performing whiskeys in 2008, you would have receieved a 163% return in 2011.

The most expensive whiskey today is a 62-year-old Dalmore single malt, of which only 12 were ever produced. Seven years ago, one fetched a princely $51,000. In September last year, a Chinese businessman bought another bottle for $195,000, which represents a 282% increase. Granted, that?s peanuts compared to?Green Mountain Coffee Roasters? in the past five years, but who would take caffeine over a good shot of whiskey?

Michael Kappen, a former banker who started the World Whisky Index, expects whiskey?investments to return annual yields at an?impressive 12%.

Also, unlike wine, whiskey, once bottled, does not age and can serve as a great long-term?investment.

If you?re curious about investing in whiskey but don?t know where to start, here?s a quick primer:

Which whiskeys should one invest in?

?Whiskey prices follow the simple logic of supply and demand,? says expert collector Mahesh Patel, who hosts an annual whiskey trade show called the Universal Whisky Experience in Las Vegas. As such, he advices would-be investors to always go for limited-edition bottles.

?Don?t go for something off the shelf, even if it?s 10, 12, 80 years old or whatever because those are generally not limited production. Those are created every year, whereas limited-run productions are maybe 100 bottles or 10,000 bottles. At 10,000 bottles, they?re going to be lower in price, but as people drink them, supply gets reduced and the prices go up immediately.?

Companies like?Fortune Brands Inc.?s Beam Global Spirits & Wine Inc. unit and?Diageo PLC?have in recent years focused their production on lucrative?small-batch bourbon made popular in recent years by shows like?AMC?s?Mad Men.

Besides buying only limited releases, investors should generally stick to bottles from iconic distilleries like Macallan, Dalmore Glenfiddich, or even better, to those from distilleries that have ceased operation, like Islay?s Port Ellen and Sutherland?s Brora.

Andy Simpson, an independent whiskey valuer and consultant, has been a keen follower of whiskey sales for some years. His Whisky Highland Index tracks the performance of some 143 distilleries at whiskey auctions.

Based on his index, here are the top 10 distilleries from which you should get your bottles of single-malt scotch, based on the price of bottles sold and the percentage gain in value.

Distillery Whisky Highland Index
1. Macallan 95
2. Dalmore 94
3. Port Ellen 90
4. Balverine 88
5. Glenfiddich 88
6. Bowmore 87
7. Ardbeg 84
8. Glen Grant 81
9. Highland Park 81
10. Brora 81

?

What are some good-value-for-the-money whiskeys investors should look out for?

One good whiskey that will be released later this month is Macallan?s fourth edition of its Easter Elchies Cask series, which ?will retail at around ?140 ($221) and should see good growth, as with most limited Macallan,? Simpson said in an email.

However, the series will be a distillery exclusive, which means you will have to take a trip up to Scotland to get your hands on it.

Another good buy, Patel?shares, is the Mackinlay Rare Old Highland Malt, which has a fascinating back story. In 1907, explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton headed down to the Antarctic, bringing along with him for company 25 cases of the drink. Three crates of this special whiskey were buried under the snow after Shackleton?s expedition failed to reach the South Pole, thought to be lost forever.

However, in 2007, a team from New Zealand managed to uncover a single crate, and carefully shipped three bottles to Whyte & Mackay in Scotland, where Master Distiller and Blender Richard Paterson analyzed the alcohol and?expertly recreated the exact taste of it. Whyte and Mackay then created a limited 50,000-bottle run of this whiskey, which retails at about $160.

?I guarantee that this whiskey will go up in price because most of it is being drunk, and the story behind it is so amazing. I?m already seeing on?eBay that some people are selling it for about double the price,? Patel elaborates.

Of course, such popular limited-edition whiskeys often sell out quickly upon release. If so, you can turn to the growing number of both traditional and online whiskey auctions, where discontinued bottles and rarities can be found. One new online auctioneer Simpson recommends is the Glasgow-based?Scotch Whisky Auctions.

Ultimately, investing in whiskeys requires you to do a lot of homework, and it is probably better if you already have a fondness for this particular poison. Simpson cautions that while there are a lot of positives associated with whiskey investing, ?the stark reality is that you can lose a lot of money if you don?t know what you?re doing.? So, only?invest?what you can afford to lose, and in the rare case that you make a bad purchase, take comfort in the fact that you can very easily drown your sorrows, at the very least.

(AP) ? Rick Santorum says his victories in Minnesota's caucuses and Missouri's non-binding primary are triumphs for conservatism and the tea party movement.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Missouri as results came in Tuesday, Santorum said his victories will resonate across the country, including in Massachusetts, the home of Mitt Romney, the putative GOP front-runner.

Santorum says he doesn't want to be a conservative alternative to Romney ? he says he wants to be the conservative alternative to President Barack Obama.

Santorum is tying Romney to Obama, saying they support similar policies. Santorum says Obama thinks he is smarter than voters and that the president supports radical ideas.

Santorum says Republicans need a candidate who draws sharp contrasts with Obama. He says he's the only candidate who can do that.

Steven Cohen: Why Mitt Romney Should "Be Concerned About the Very Poor"

Last week's news reports included the jarring juxtaposition of two very remarkable stories. The first was Mitt Romney's amazing confession that he didn't lose any sleep over poor people in America. Or to quote the candidate: "I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it." He went on to say that he was also "not concerned about the very rich. They're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America -- the 90-95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling."

The second story that contrasts sharply with Mitt's mistake was reported in a New York Times series about the 40,000 homeless people now living in New York City. The story points out that most of New York's homeless are working families with kids and parents commuting long distances from shelter to school and work. Today, there are more homeless New Yorkers than at any time since we started collecting data on homelessness. There are many causes of homelessness just as there are many causes of poverty.

Poverty must be seen as a relative rather than absolute status. Poverty in America is not the extreme poverty that my Earth Institute colleagues are working on in Africa. Most poor people in America are not in daily danger of starvation. In Africa, the issue is often sheer survival. But even when there is sufficient food and shelter to scrape by, poverty's impact, especially on children, can be devastating. You don't need to be in imminent peril to feel poor. To hear a Presidential candidate dismiss the issue, even as he dials his comments back and tries to retract them, is still unbelievable. Then there is his assertion that 90-95% of the country is "struggling." For a guy with a reputation for being a sharp analyst, those numbers are pretty far off. I very much doubt that 95% of the country is now struggling. The official poverty rate is about 15%, and some analysts believe the actual rate is closer to 25%. Many working families are staying in the middle class by working multiple jobs and long hours. Lots of people are in rough shape, but if the number was 95%, there'd have been riots in the streets this past weekend instead of Superbowl parties. Is this really the same guy who ran a (very) profitable business, managed a successful Olympics and did a decent job of governing Massachusetts? Perhaps it really is true that running for President can damage ones intellectual capacities.

I agree with Governor Romney that we must rebuild the wealth and confidence of the American middle class. But I also think that we have a moral responsibility to understand and address the issue of poverty here in America. Despite the Great Recession, America remains a land of almost unimaginable wealth and plenty. Poverty in the midst of great riches is at best puzzling and at worst a failure of a community's ethics. The causes of poverty are complicated and I do not pretend to understand all of them, but we deserve an honest discussion of its causes and its cures. I want a President who is concerned about poverty and worries about how to break the cycle of poverty we see here in America. I want a President who pays attention to issues not just because his pollsters tell him to, but because he sees a problem that government must try to address.

I accept the idea that there are different ways to address poverty. Conservatives believe that a rising economic tide lifts all boats. That may be true - but first you've got to have a boat. Otherwise the tide simply sweeps you away. It is clearly true that a shrinking economy hurts poor people more than it hurts wealthier people. So any real solution to poverty must involve both economic growth and economic mobility. In a global economy with foreign governments assisting their own corporations, a totally free market in America will not create the growth or the mobility we need. Nor will government-managed corporations. We need a sophisticated relationship between government and the private sector to achieve both economic growth and economic mobility.

FDR's New Deal and LBJ's Great Society/War on Poverty were the last two concerted efforts to reduce American poverty. Neither achieved perfect success, but both reduced poverty. The New Deal established the "safety net" we hear so much about today and the War on Poverty reduced the poverty rate to about 10% - still the lowest rate in American history. The New Deal probably saved American capitalism by laying the foundation for the great American middle class that was finally built after World War II. In both cases, government carved out an effective role in the nation's economic life.

Assuming Mitt is finally able to close the deal and secure the Republican nomination, the fall campaign should be interesting. Mitt has a particular problem this fall. He must maintain the Republican base, including the Tea Party, while moving to the political center to attract the largely a-political independent voter. Obama will be doing the same as each tries to redefine the political center in their own image in order to win the election. Despite the efforts to strip Obama of the legitimacy of his Presidency, President Obama still has the advantage of incumbency. The American President is both our head of government and head of state. As head of government he is Prime Minister. As head of state, he is our monarch, representing the nation and providing a useful symbol of unity. Presidential incumbency is a powerful political tool. As Governor Romney moves closer to the Republican nomination, he needs to understand that moving forward he must play error-free ball. No more dismissing poverty, $10,000 bets, or delays in disclosing his income. Any more fumbles and Mitt will end up retreating John Kerry-like to his many sumptuous homes.

(AP) ? The first democratically elected president of the Maldives resigned Tuesday and was replaced by his vice president after the police and army clashed in the streets of the island nation amid protests over the arrest of a top judge.

Mohammed Waheed Hassan, who previously worked as a top UNICEF official, was sworn in as the new Maldivian president in the afternoon.

The resignation marked a stunning fall for President Mohamed Nasheed, a former human rights campaigner who defeated the nation's longtime ruler in the country's first multiparty election. Nasheed was also an environmental celebrity, traveling the world to persuade governments to combat the climate change that could raise sea levels and inundate his archipelago nation.

Nasheed presented his resignation in a nationally televised address Tuesday afternoon after police joined the protesters and then clashed with soldiers in the streets. Some of the soldiers then defected to the police side.

"I don't want to hurt any Maldivian. I feel my staying on in power will only increase the problems, and it will hurt our citizens," Nasheed said. "So the best option available to me is to step down."

Hassan's office denied widespread reports that the military pressured Nasheed to resign in the wake of the clashes.

"It was not a coup at all, it was the wish of the people," said Ahmed Thoufeeg, Hassan's secretary.

The latest protests in this Indian Ocean nation known for its lavish beach resorts erupted after Nasheed ordered the military to arrest Abdulla Mohamed, the chief judge of the Criminal Court. The judge had ordered the release of a government critic he said had been illegally detained.

The vice president, Supreme Court, Human Rights Commission, Judicial Services Commission and the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have all called for Mohamed to be released.

The government accused the judge of political bias and corruption. It said that the country's judicial system had failed and called on the U.N to help solve the crisis.

After weeks of protests, the crisis came to a head Tuesday when hundreds of police started demonstrating in the capital, Male, after officials ordered them to withdraw protection for government and opposition supporters protesting close to each other. The withdrawal resulted in a clash that injured at least three people.

Later, troops fired rubber bullets and clashed with the police. When Nasheed visited the police and urged them to end the protest, they refused and instead chanted for his resignation.

Nasheed began his term with great hopes, ending Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's 30-year-reign by winning the country's first democratic elections in 2008. Supporters danced and cheered in the streets at the victory of the charismatic pro-democracy activist, who had been repeatedly jailed by Gayoom's regime.

Nasheed became an energetic global environmental crusader, founding the Climate Vulnerable Forum, to coordinate environmental policy among a group of about 30 countries most affected by climate change.

He held a Cabinet meeting underwater in scuba gear to dramatize the threat of rising oceans to his low-lying archipelago nation of 300,000 people, and said he may need to relocate his entire population if nothing was done. He also announced plans to make his nation "carbon-neutral," using wind and solar projects.

A documentary on his efforts, "The Island President," won awards at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals and is slated to open next month in New York.

But over the past year, Nasheed was battered by protests in his Sunni Muslim nation.

Maldivians demonstrated against soaring prices they blamed on economic reforms he said were needed to bridge the budget deficit. Islamic activists also protested in demand of more religiously conservative policies.

As the protests grew, there were disturbing signs the one-time rights activist was changing.

Police routinely cracked down on opposition protests, while letting government supporters gather freely. For many, the judge's arrest was the final straw.

Mohamed is still in military custody.

Ghana, Mali scrape through to African Cup semis

By GERALD IMRAY

updated 4:24 p.m. ET Feb. 6, 2012

FRANCEVILLE, Gabon (AP) -Ghana and Mali scraped through to the African Cup of Nations semifinals on Sunday, as Tunisia and Gabon fell in agonizing fashion.

Ghana beat Tunisia 2-1 in extra time after goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi's blunder gifted the Black Stars a 101st-minute winner in a tense, bad tempered quarterfinal at Stade de Franceville that the Tunisians had controlled before Mathlouthi's decisive error.

Mali beat co-host Gabon 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinal in Libreville after they were level at 1-1 at the end of 120 minutes.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon's hero of the group stage, missed the decisive spot kick and dissolved into tears in the middle of a huddle of players as the home team's tournament ended in bitter disappointment.

Gabon won its first three games and was six minutes away from a first appearance in the semifinals, only for Cheick Diabate to equalize in the 84th and give Mali the chance to steal victory and a place in the last four in the shootout.

Ghana faces Zambia and Mali plays Ivory Coast in Wednesday's semifinals, leaving top-ranked African teams and tournament favorites Ghana and Ivory Coast still on course to meet in the Feb. 12 final.

"I think we were lucky there," Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan said after his team pounced on Mathlouthi's mistake. "You know in football anything can happen, luck also counts and you see the error the keeper made. I wouldn't blame him, but it happens in football."

Eric Mouloungui scored for Gabon from close-range after Aubameyang's cutback in the 55th minute at Stade de l'Amitie to seemingly continue a dream African Cup for the co-host.

But Diabate turned cleverly and forced his late shot under goalkeeper Didier Ovono to keep a stubborn Mali team alive at the tournament.

Aubameyang, who had also hit the post in normal time, then had his penalty saved by Soumaila Diakite in a gut-wrenching end for the co-host, allowing Mali captain Seydou Keita to step up and send his team through and Gabon out.

Mali's players, led by Keita, celebrated wildly on the running track around the field as the weeping Aubameyang was consoled by team mates and the previously rowdy, joyous Libreville crowd was silenced for the first time in two weeks.

At Franceville, the sparse groups of local supporters spent the buildup to the Ghana-Tunisia quarterfinal with their backs to the field watching the live broadcast of Gabon's game on giant TV screens at the stadium.

The crowd danced and sang at Stade de Franceville and a group of ball boys ran up and down behind one goal doing back flips and somersaults when Gabon took the lead.

Ghana led Tunisia in the 10th minute as John Mensah's rollercoaster ride of a tournament continued when he headed in at the far post from an Andre Ayew corner having scored and been sent off in his country's first game. He later left the field injured.

Saber Khalifa put Tunisia level, but despite holding the upper hand for large parts of the game the North Africans were undone by Mathlouthi's extra-time howler, which allowed Ayew to side foot into an empty net and Ghana to progress.

"It's a pity it ended like this for us," said Mathlouthi, who ironically won the game's fair play award. "It was my fault on every level."

Neither team deserved a fair play award as the match - which was already physical - descended into an ugly end when Tunisia's Aymen Abdennour was sent off for elbowing Ayew, leading to a shoving match near the corner flag between both sets of players.

Issam Jemaa made two reckless challenges in quick succession that went unpunished and Ghana's defense also mercilessly scythed down Youssef Msakni in the final minutes.

"They made a game look like a war," Ghana assistant coach Kwesi Appiah said.

WIMCIP Articles ? Small Business Advertising ? 5 Strategies To ...

The majority of small business marketing is done blind.

Unfortunate, but the truth, nevertheless.

If business owners aren?t active copying each other (not realizing the copiers are themselves being copied by the ones they?re copying), then they?re attempting to emulate the marketing strategies of the enormous corporations, with their deep pockets and vast budgets.

Sorry to say all this does is lead to what?s often called ?marketing incest?, because everybody just gets dumber and dumber. In short, it doesn?t work, chiefly because there?s no way for the business owner to tell what, if anything, is in reality making him any money.

However, don?t give up just yet. Because so long as you follow a small number of simple but very powerful rules, you ?ll quickly find your advertising becomes profitable.

So here are 5 advertising secrets for successfully marketing a small business

2. Marketing with a definite call to action (direct response)

The most effective form of marketing is direct response marketing, which, in contrast to ?ordinary? advertising seeks to elicit a selected response from the target market rather than just wishing, usually in vain, to grow the ?image? of the business or promote that most nefarious of frauds, ?brand awareness?.

2. Measuring and testing

Business owners must watch every marketing piece or campaign like a falcon, and determine to the highest accuracy the responses they get. From the shortest email to the most complex multi-step direct mail campaign they MUST know what?s happening with the prospect? who?s buying, how much are they spending and what services are they spending their money on?

They can tell, with a very modest margin of error, exactly how many sales and how much profit every single item of marketing they?ve done has ever made them.

And by a procedure of stepwise-refinement, they can take so-so ads and transform them into powerful marketing machines that churn out massive profits like clockwork, year in, year out.

3. Accountableness Because sharp small business owners track every little thing, they make every ad carry its own weight.

There is no hemming and hawing and ?gut instinct? permitted. It all comes down to the numbers.

If an advertisement isn?t turning a profit, it?s cut from the campaign, in a flash.

4. Feedback, not failure

When an ad doesn?t make a profit, your average business owner falls into despair and feels he or she has missed the boat.

Savvy marketers don?t do this. They understand it?s a numbers game, and by coming up with an ad which didn?t work, they?ve learned a lesson worth learning: one more way NOT to write an ad for that product or service in that market. The key is to let your emotional attachment to results drop away and be more objective.

5. Every piece MUST include an offer

Effective marketers recognize every single piece of advertising they do MUST have one offer (and one offer only). It must be specific, clear and unambiguous.

Moreover, for best results it must be time- or quantity-limited to make it more desirable. This is altogether contrary to what common sense would suggest but it works. It?s called ?scarcity? and it?s probably the most potent weapon in the marketer?s armoury.

I promise, if you pay attention to these five simple strategies you?ll get an immediate increase in your profits.

Jobs report boosts Dow to four-year high

A drop in the unemployment rate to its lowest in three years propelled the Dow Jones industrial average Friday to its highest close since before the 2008 financial crisis.? The Dow jumped 156 points to close at 12862.

A drop in the unemployment rate to its lowest in three years propelled the Dow Jones industrial average Friday to its highest close since before the 2008 financial crisis. The Nasdaq composite index hit an 11-year high.

The Dow jumped 156.82 points to 12,862.23, its highest mark since May 19, 2008, about four months before Lehman Brothers investment bank collapsed.

Before the market opened, the Labor Department said the economy added 243,000 jobs in January. It was the strongest job growth in nine months. The increase in hiring pushed the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent, the lowest since February 2009.

The surprising data gave financial markets a morning jolt that lasted throughout the trading day. The Nasdaq index closed 45.98 points higher at 2,905.66, its highest since December 2000, during the steep decline that followed the dot-com stock bubble.

The price of ultra-safe Treasury notes dropped, sending yields higher, and the price of oil rose for the first time in a week.

"In this economy, only one variable matters right now, and that variable is employment," said Lawrence Creatura, an equity portfolio manager at Federated Investors. "This report was great news. It was beyond all expectations, literally. The number was higher than even the highest forecast."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 19.36 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,344.90, its highest close since last July. The S&P 500 surged 2.2 percent for the week, its fifth straight week of gains. That's the longest weekly winning stretch since January of 2011.

More evidence that the economy is gaining strength followed the jobs report. A trade group said the service industry expanded at the fastest pace since last February. The government also said factory orders rose 1.1 percent in December, supported by a rebound in orders for heavy machinery.

Bank of America led the 30 stocks in the Dow, rising 5.2 percent. Only two stocks were lower: Merck and Procter & Gamble.

Treasury prices fell, lifting the yield on the 10-year note Treasury to 1.93 percent. When bond prices fall, yields rise. The benchmark 10-year rate had traded below 1.79 percent earlier this week as traders bought U.S. Treasurys on renewed concern over Europe's ongoing debt crisis.

The U.S. jobs figures helped markets in Europe rally on Friday despite further evidence that the 17-country eurozone is heading for recession. Germany's DAX closed 1.7 percent higher, and France's CAC-40 gained 1.5 percent.

Among companies whose stocks made large moves:

? Genworth Financial soared 14 percent, the best gain in the S&P 500. The insurance company reported late Thursday that it swung to a profit in the most recent quarter, helped by gains in sales of life insurance.

? Weyerhaeuser gained 5.7 percent after reporting better quarterly earnings than analysts' forecasts. The timber and real estate company's earnings still sank 62 percent.

? Video game maker Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. rose 3 percent. The company reported a 65 percent drop in quarterly profits after the market closed Thursday, but Wall Street's analysts expected much worse.

CSA Standards for Sustainable Events | Green Conduct

In 2010, CSA Standards, a leading standards-based solutions organization, introduced standards for use by event organizers seeking to plan and execute sustainable events. A sustainable event entails incorporating considerations of the environmental, social, and economic impacts of hosting an event into all areas of event planning and management.

When organizing a sustainable event, the overarching goal for an organization is to maximize the value and experience of the event while striving to support a high quality of life, environmental health, and economic prosperity.

The principles of a sustainable event include: ethical behaviour, accountability, and transparency; engagement of the community and local stakeholders; positive benefits for the environment and society; accessible and inclusive setting; safe and secure atmosphere and facilities for spectators, participants, and workers; excellent customer/client experience; and a positive legacy.

?Implementing this standard will help to make an event more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable in an ethical and transparent manner,? says Bonnie Rose, President, CSA Standards. Where all applicable requirements specified in the standard are implemented, event organizers may use conformance to support public claims of greater sustainability.

The CSA Z2010-10 Requirements and guidance for organizers of sustainable events standard integrates the management and sustainability practices recommended by a number of sources into a practical application for a wide variety of cultural, business, and sporting events and festivals.

?Sustainable development is broad and means different things to different people. With Z2010, emphasis is placed on an integrated approach that addresses stakeholders? interests, regulatory requirements as well as environmental, social and economic impacts and opportunities throughout the life-cycle of an event,? says Ann Duffy, Technical Committee Chair and former Corporate Sustainability Officer, VANOC. ?By minimizing negative impacts on the environment, augmenting the positive benefits, and creating positive legacies for present and future generations, this standard will help event organizers plan and execute events.?

The Z2010 standard was built on the work of The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and the VANOC Sustainability Management and Reporting System (SMRS) and the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology?s (AISTS) Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit ? a collaboration with VANOC.

The standard?s requirements and guidance for leadership, planning, operations, employee and supplier engagement, communications and reporting are particularly relevant for medium and large scale events ? though it can be scaled for small event organizers, as well. Z2010 is consistent with international norms of behaviour. In this context, environmental concerns include the natural surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, and people, as well as their interrelationships. Social and economic concerns include labour practices, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development.

The Z2010-10 requirements and guidance for organizers of sustainable events (PDF) costs $79 (CAD) and is available at theirwebsite?or by calling 800-463-6727.
