The Mommy Worry Wars

Anxiety is not only the most common mental problem in the United States, it verges on a national obsession. Last year, New York Magazine declared it the signature diagnosis of our time with Xanax as its pharmacological mascot, taking over from depression and Prozac in the 1990s. The New York Times devotes an entire ongoing series to probing the anxious mind. And the online forum the Edge asks as its key question for 2013: ?what should we be worried about?? All this worrying represents our own apocalyptic myopia. Before we know it, we?re not just worrying about love, death, sickness, children, money?we?re worrying about the worrying itself.

The punishing epicenter of anxiety obsession is women?s fertility and pregnancy. Women who have trouble conceiving often believe that their own distress is making it harder to conceive. And who can blame them, when even fertility centers urge them to create a ?stress-free environment.? And of course, with pregnancy, the worry doesn?t end?it?s just beginning. Scattershot reports link anxiety to miscarriage or preterm birth with random speculation, as in: Will Kim Kardashian?s divorce stress hasten the birth of her baby? Will emotional symptoms during pregnancy cause developmental delays? A finding here, an anecdote there?women can easily get the wrong idea.

And the reigning impression is wrong: The weight of evidence suggests that moderate levels of stress and anxiety do none of the things we fear. They seem not to affect whether women are able to conceive, whether they carry the fetus to term, or whether their kids reach normal developmental milestones. (If anything, some maternal stress during pregnancy seems to make kids mature a little faster.) This doesn?t mean, of course, that women with anxiety shouldn?t seek care and support. But they should do so for their own sakes?not because distress will ruin their shot at motherhood or somehow damage their fetuses.

Take fertility. In 2011, British psychologists pulled together data from 14 studies of in vitro fertilization. In each study, researchers asked women to assess their emotional distress, anxiety, or depression. Then they followed them through a single cycle of fertility treatment to see whether they got pregnant or not. The smaller individual studies arrived at disparate results, but the meta-analysis rolling up all the findings, which included over 3,500 women and appeared in the BMJ, was fairly definitive: Women?s emotional state before IVF bore no relationship to whether the treatment worked. In other words, women with more extreme levels of anxiety or depression were just as likely to get pregnant after a single cycle as women with milder levels. ?It was a great relief,? said psychologist Jacky Boivin, who has counseled women struggling with infertility for years and who led the meta-analysis team. (Less clear is whether extreme levels of stress, as in war or famine, suppress natural fertility. They may, but the effect may also turn out to be temporary, according to Boivin: ?At some point, even in harsh environments, reproduction tends to come back.?)

What about during pregnancy? The old idea that stress causes miscarriage isn?t supported by the data and seems, thankfully, to have lost some of its traction. The current angst, though?that emotional symptoms can lead to preterm birth?threatens to torment women at least as much. It?s true that you can find smaller studies that fuel the fear. But consider this large, population-based work, in which researchers interviewed over 78,000 Danish women. Those who reported higher levels of life stress and more emotional symptoms like anxiety when they were 30 weeks pregnant did tend to give birth earlier. But the difference was pretty minimal: The women with the highest life-stress scores gave birth, on average, about two days before women with lower scores. Those who reported the most intense emotional symptoms had pregnancies that were just two-and-a-half days shorter. This isn?t an effect that matters in children?s lives.

Pregnant woman. Don't worry, stress may not affect your pregnancy.

Finally, there?s the question of how Mom?s distress during pregnancy affects kids? actual development. Here, too, the data are mixed. The strongest studies try to separate the influence of maternal stress during pregnancy from the stress or adversity, after birth, in children?s home environments. (Often there is a correlation between the two.) This research also tries to assess children directly, rather than relying on parents? reports about their behavior. The most persuasive of these papers suggest that mild to moderate stress during pregnancy doesn?t hamper babies? maturation?if anything, it may slightly hasten it. In one study, fetuses whose mothers reported higher levels of distress tended to be more active in utero, a positive developmental sign. In another study, newborns of more distressed women conveyed electrical signals more rapidly along the nerve from the ear to the brain, also a marker of neural development. And in a study of toddlers, the results were more striking still: Two-year-olds who were exposed in utero to more maternal distress, including depression or anxiety, scored higher on a standard measure of child development. ?It just looks like they mature a little faster,? said Janet DiPietro of Johns Hopkins, who conducted these studies. In other words, there is little evidence that maternal stress during pregnancy is bad for babies.

DiPietro, who is one of the foremost experts in the world on fetal outcomes, says she finds the continued intensity of work on these questions puzzling, given the findings so far. ?I?m trying to get out of the stress stuff!? she told me. So should the rest of us. It?s time to stop worrying that our worrying will prevent us from reproducing successfully. Survival of the species, it turns out, just isn?t that fragile.

New York teachers union unhappy with property tax cap, sues for more money

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend, "Doug" (24), and I (22) have been in a long-distance relationship for a year, but we were friends for a couple of years before that. I had never had a serious relationship before and lacked experience. Doug has not only been in two other long-term relationships, but has had sex with more than 15 women. One of them is an amateur porn actress.I knew about this, but it didn't bother me until recently. Doug had a party, and while he was drunk he told one of his buddies -- in front of me -- that he should watch a certain porn film starring his ex-girlfriend. ...

Home Improvement Made Easy | www.SponsorDirectory.com

Improving your home can be quite exciting! Maybe fix, replace or freshen-up something! However, if you do not have the right advice or information, this can be very stressful for all involved. This article contains a number of tips to help you and your household make a success of that home improvement project.

If you are working on a new home improvement project, make sure that you are complimenting your environment rather than fighting against it. If you are in an area that has high winds, then you most likely will not be spending much time outside. As such, it probably would be in your best interest to work on indoor arrangements. By the same token, you can still enjoy the outdoors, by simply adding a glass structure. This can help block out the environment while still providing you with an outdoors atmosphere.

To keep your painting equipment from crusting up or getting dry when you take a break, keep Ziploc baggies handy. When you go on your break, put every brush or roller head in a bag and seal. This prevents the paint already on the brushes from drying out before you apply another coat.

A simple way to improve your bathroom is by repainting it. Always use a satin/eggshell or semi-gloss paint, as this is more mold resistant than a flat paint, and can also be wiped down more easily. When choosing a color, take into account the size of the bathroom. If it is very small, then opt for a light color. If the ceiling is of low or average height, then consider painting it a shade lighter than the walls. This will create the illusion that the ceiling is higher.

Always insist on references before hiring a contractor to work on your home improvement project. Make sure your potential contractor is properly licensed to perform the work in question. Hiring a professional is worth the money to give you peace of mind that the job is done right the first time.

Considering the cost of hiring a plumber, you will probably want to do some of the simpler plumbing tasks yourself. An essential tool is the pipe wrench. It is adjustable, so it can fit a pipe perfectly, and it provides an excellent grip and leverage. This one tool will more than pay for itself.

When creating a budget for a home improvement project, make sure that you factor in ?small? expenses like nails, tools, tape, and so forth. The cost of these surprises can really impact your overall budget and leave you scratching your head about how you spent so much. It?s better to plan for them ahead of time.

So, home improvement has the potential to be a fun and exciting project! However, the process can be very difficult and stressful if you do not have the right advice and information. Use the tips found in this article to improve your home with ease!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Teaches Us About 'Reinforcing' On 'Sesame Street'

Sometimes we like to imagine that we live in a wonderful world where the ultimate source of validation for an actor is to be featured on a "Sesame Street" segment. Yesterday, that version of reality seemed a little bit truer thanks to an appearance from Doer of No Wrong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt on the children's show. [...]

Hackers use alert system for zombie warnings

Warnings about the zombie apocalypse may seem pretty amusing, but officials say they're dead serious about figuring out who hacked into the nation's public warning system to broadcast such messages in a handful of states.

So far, people in California Michigan, Montana and New Mexico have heard the warnings about attacking zombies that have been sent over the Emergency Alert System.

"Local authorities in your area have reported the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living," the message warned. "Do not attempt to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are considered extremely dangerous."

The subject matter may be humorous, but Greg MacDonald with the Montana Broadcasters Association said the consequences of such attacks on the alert system could be severe.

"This looks like somebody being a prankster, but maybe it's somebody testing just to see if they could do this, to do some real damage," MacDonald said. "Suddenly you create a panic and people are fleeing somewhere and you end up with traffic jams and accidents and who knows what."

From phone- to Web-based system
The U.S. recently replaced its old telephone-based alert system with a Web-based one. The Federal Communications Commission sent an urgent advisory Tuesday urging stations to reset their alert system passwords, disconnect their Internet connections and take other steps to make sure the equipment is protected from outside attack.

In Michigan, hackers broke into the system with audio or text messages at two stations on Monday. Michigan Association of Broadcasters President Karole White said the breach appeared to be related to default passwords that the stations hadn't changed. The U.S. recently replaced its old telephone-based alert system with a web-based one.

In Los Angeles, a radio station that had its alert system breached sent out a zombie message, according to Richard Rudman, a broadcast engineer and vice chair of the California State Emergency Communications Committee. He declined to name the station but said any that were hacked were using default passwords for their alert systems or lacked adequate computer security.

The FCC on Tuesday also asked stations to check their equipment to make sure no further unauthorized alerts were queued up for future transmission, according to a copy of the advisory provided by the Montana Broadcasters Association.

No one has been arrested in connection with the hacking incidents.

Emergency Alert System background
All U.S. broadcasters are required to be part of the Emergency Alert System, which evolved from Cold War-era systems dating to the 1950s and '60s. The system was created so the president could address the public in a national emergency, but it's mainly used by state and local authorities to deliver weather warnings and Amber Alerts. The first national test of the revamped system was in November 2011.

WNMU in the northern Michigan city of Marquette was broadcasting an episode of "Barney and Friends" just before 4 p.m. Monday when an ominous voice warned of zombies on the loose. The station quickly caught the errant message and disabled the system.

"There were really no complaints," said station general manager Eric Smith. "A couple of viewers ... called, wondering what it was all about."

Michigan FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet said his office has been notified but declined further comment. The Associated Press left messages with representatives of the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Homeland Security.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said its public alert and warning system wasn't breached and the hacking incidents did not affect its ability to activate the system nationally. FEMA also said it's supporting the FCC and other federal agencies on the investigation.

White, who oversees the alert system in Michigan, says she's confident that systems there are now secure, though any breach is a concern.

"We feel fortunate they were not able to get into the entire Emergency Alert System ? that's the good news," she said. "The bad news is they got in at all."

Comcast sees growth from NBCUniversal stronger than anticipated

(Reuters) - Stronger-than-expected growth in NBCUniversal's entertainment unit gave Comcast Corp the impetus to buy the rest of the company from General Electric Co two years earlier than expected.

"NBCUniversal's 2012 results highlight in particular the improving performance of our broadcast businesses," Comcast Chairman and Chief Executive Brian Roberts said in a call with analysts. "NBC's prime time performance this fall has been improving.

"While we recognize it is early in the turnaround, this is driving a big swing in momentum which should continue to help the network."

NBCUniversal's cable networks, such as the Golf Channel, E! and Bravo among others, rose 3.3 percent to $8.77 billion last year. Cable networks have become the main growth driver in the last few years for the industry.

Roberts said the numbers made an even stronger case for buying out GE's 49 percent stake for $16.7 billion. The deal values NBCUniversal at $39 billion.

Bill Smead, chief investment officer of Smead Capital Management, who owns 273,000 of Comcast said he liked the deal because Comcast will be able to make money on NBC's programming as new ways to watch content emerge.

"There is a myriad of distribution systems that will pay for NBC content in the future," he said.

Comcast said NBCUniversal's total revenue last year rose 13 percent to $23.81 billion. Its broadcast TV network, NBC, a long-time industry laggard, saw the biggest revenue growth, gaining 27.4 percent to $8.15 billion on the strength of popular television events such as the Olympics and the 2012 Super Bowl.

Comcast shares touched a multi-year high of $42 on the Nasdaq, before falling back to $39.99 in later afternoon trade, still up 2.6 percent from Tuesday's close.

Marrying Comcast's more than 22 million cable subscribers with its own and NBCUniversal's content assets is how the company "strategically differentiates" itself from its competitors, Roberts said.

Its rivals Viacom and Time Warner , separate content from distribution.

THEME PARKS

NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, a longtime confidante of Roberts, has targeted the Universal Studios theme parks as a rich vein to tap for both growth and investment. Burke, who once ran EuroDisney, cited theme parks as a major area of growth in 2013.

For the second year in a row, Comcast said it would boost its capital investment plan at NBCUniversal, aiming for a 25 percent increase with a big chunk of that pledged to new theme park attractions.

Comcast plans to bring its "Harry Potter" attraction to Hollywood, for instance, taking aim at Disney's core market.

Wunderlich Securities analyst Matthew Harrigan estimates that Comcast invested $155 million in theme parks last year.

"The parks are doing fabulously," said Harrigan. "They were the poor cousin of Disney but not anymore."

Harrigan called NBCUniversal a "work in progress" that was still stabilizing. While he agrees that NBCUniversal is headed in the right direction, he said the Universal studio's full-year operating cash flow in 2012 was underwhelming at $79 million, up from $24 million in 2011.

In addition to the parks, Burke also spotlighted for growth affiliate fees for NBC's cable networks, fees that pay-TV operators give to programmers to distribute their networks, and retransmission consent fees, or payments made to air a network's broadcast signal.

He also said that the rate advertisers pay for commercials on NBCUniversal properties is lower than rivals with weaker ratings and could also improve this year.

Comcast, which ranks as the nation's largest pay-TV operators and still receives the majority of its revenue from its core cable systems business, said it would invest 10 percent more in cable capital expenditures in a bid to increase Internet speeds.

As with most cable companies, its cable unit's growth is coming largely from its Internet service. Last year, it added 1.2 million Internet customers while it lost 336,000 video customers.

The cable business' programming costs should rise in the low double digits this year, Comcast said. Comcast signed a new distribution agreement with Fox on Tuesday for an undisclosed sum that includes the rights for live and on-demand shows, as well as access to Fox's programs on mobile devices.

Finance chief says tax revenues on target for this year ...

Posted on 04 February 2013.

By DRU WILLIS
CorneliusNews.net

With 58 percent of the fiscal year completed, town projections show special-buttons31athat tax revenue is on track to meet the budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, Cornelius commissioners were told Monday night.

?Obviously collections will continue to go on for the next five months, but based on what we have budgeted we are going to make budget,? finance director Jackie Huffman said in a presentation at the board?s ?pre-meeting? at Town Hall.

At Monday?s meeting, the board also voted to endorse staff recommendations on a plan for sidewalks on Torrence Chapel Road, and got updates on the MI-Connection Communications System and the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson. Commissioners also discussed revisions to the town?s code of ordinances, and appointed several people to various town boards.

The ?pre-meeting,? a session before the regular Town Board meeting, also featured a presentation by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the University of North Carolina on a new Charlotte region quality of life study.

BUDGET OUTLOOK

In her report on the town budget, including revenue and expenses, Ms. Huffman said property, sales and franchise taxes make up more than 80 percent of the town?s revenue.

The town projected receiving $2,395,004 in sales tax revenue, and so far has estimated receiving $200,000 a month. So far, Cornelius has received $1,500,000, so it is about $35,000 ahead of budget.

?We will make budget easily in sales tax assuming there is no drop in sales tax,? Ms. Huffman said, adding that her report did not include December numbers yet.

Meanwhile, property taxes will be coming in soon as they are typically paid in December and January. ?So the majority of taxes that will be collected have come in,? she continued.

The town?s utility franchise tax revenue is budgeted at $1,549,721 with approximately $694,000 (44 percent) collected.

?It?s my expectation that we probably will not make budget on that one line item,? Huffman stated. ?But the other two ? property tax and sales tax ? will more than make up for it.?

So far, the town has spent 52.6 percent ? or $10,402,959.18 ? of its $19,976,471 expense budget.

TORRENCE CHAPEL SIDEWALKS

After two public meetings, the board voted to follow the recommendations of town staff for a proposed sidewalk along Torrence Chapel Road.

The sidewalk will be installed during a project with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to widen the street running north of West Catawba Avenue. The road currently is about 15 feet wide, and will be widened to 20 feet, averaging about 2 1/2 more feet on each lane.

Which side the sidewalk will be built is still to be determined. The first public meeting saw disagreement over whether to place it on the north and east side of the road, while the second brought sentiment against placing it on the other side. However, Town Manager Anthony Roberts said he felt a basic agreement that the south and west side of the street would be best and for it not to go past Senlac Lane.

?What DOT wants to hear from this board is do we want to partner with them and move forward with them on the sidewalk,? Mr. Roberts said before the vote.

MI-CONNECTION, ADA JENKINS UPDATES

Cornelius resident Rodney Short gave a short presentation on the Ada Jenkins Center, a regional community services center in Davidson where he is co-chair of board of directors. He said there have been ?quantifiable and measurable? results on the town?s investments in programs there.

For example, of the 99 students in the center?s LEARN Works after school program ? which serves impoverished, at-risk children in first through sixth grades ? 55 list their zip code as Cornelius 28031. The program itself has a nearly 100 percent success rate of students going to the next grade, he said.

?The level of quality and dedication of the folks that serve on that board and what they are able to accomplish with a minimum of dollars is just incredible,? Commissioner Chuck Travis said.

Mr. Short also serves as a member of the MI-Connection board of directors and gave a second-quarter financial and operations report. MI-Connection is the local cable and internet system owned by the towns of Davidson and Mooresville. It serves about 15,000 customers in the Lake Norman area, including Cornelius.

Total revenue in the 2nd quarter that ended Dec. 2012 was $167,431, or 4.2 percent, better than 2012, he said, and the revenue is driven by growing number of customers. But the system is still losing money.

?As far as long term plans for the company, we have looked at a few things. And growing the customer base is the thing to be done. It?s the solution that?s most achievable and it?s the most realistic thing we can try to do, and that?s exactly what we are trying to do. But it?s a difficult solution,? Mr. Travis said.

Julie Miller was appointed to the Historic Preservation Commission and the town board also voted to extend a contract for auditors Mark Starnes & Associates.

Anthony Roberts reported in his town manager?s report that sidewalks in the area continue to be fixed and repaired with an end date estimated in mid-March. Also, eight of 20 new Town of Cornelius signs have been erected. The town also recently purchased 115 various trees from a local business going out of business of ?good size, calibre, and height? for about one-quarter of the price, if not less, including installation. They will be planted in local parks.

Takeover costs dent NYSE Euronext's Q4 profit

PARIS (AP) ? Costs related to its upcoming takeover and debt refinancing pushed net income at exchange operator NYSE Euronext down 75 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared to a year earlier.

The owner of the New York Stock Exchange said Tuesday it earned $28 million in the last quarter of 2012, compared with $110 million in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The company partially blamed the drop on merger costs and write-offs necessary to clear the way for its $8 billion acquisition by Intercontinental Exchange, a deal announced in December. It also paid $24 million to refinance a portion of its outstanding debt.

Without these charges, it said its fourth-quarter earnings would have been $105 million, still down on $130 million it earned the year before.

Earnings for 2012 were down 29 percent at $462 million on falling trading volumes, largely related to the exceptional volatility that existed in markets in 2011. Revenues for the year fell 18 percent to $3.7 billion.

The company said its 2012 results suffered in comparison with the previous year but contended that was because 2011 was unusual given the prevailing concerns over Europe's debt crisis and the future of the euro. Amid the uncertainty, the number of trades skyrocketed ? a bonus for the exchange operator.

Though an annual comparison is clouded by what occurred in 2011, NYSE Euronext does face long-term challenges.

Profit margins in cash equities broking have been on a downward trend for several years, as trading has become more technology-driven and commoditized. However, futures exchanges, like the Atlanta-based Intercontinental Exchange, or ICE, have been able to maintain their profits because contracts are written by exchanges and must be bought and sold in the same place. Stocks, on the other hand, can be bought and sold on any exchange.

Softballs ahead of the Super Bowl in CBS pregrame

(AP) ? With storylines ranging from head injuries to deer antler extract, CBS had a spicy gumbo of issues for its daylong pregame coverage of the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Party background noise for most viewers, the oft-derided Super Bowl pregame programming can also be revealing of the broadcasting network. Often, networks bend over backward to awkwardly promote unrelated shows. Fox (one shudders to recall) once put a red carpet in a parking lot with Ryan Seacrest.

CBS's coverage of its 18th Super Bowl didn't lack in cross-promotion (including one shameless tie-in with Pizza Hut), but it had a more professional feel than the gluttonous pregame affairs often do. The network centered its Super Bowl lead-up on teary human interest stories and football-centric programming.

But there was plenty of soft-balling. The controversial Baltimore Raven Ray Lewis was interviewed not by a journalist, but by his former teammate and current CBS Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe.

The interview, disappointingly, was taped before the story broke alleging his use of deer antler extract, which includes a banned substance. No need to worry, though, Sharpe quickly explained that issue was old news. He also let Lewis completely sidestep addressing the double murder case in which Lewis testified against two men and pleaded guilty to a meisdemanor charge of obstruction of justice.

The biggest issue in the NFL today ? head injuries ? was frequently discussed by the CBS crew, including a story by NFL Today host James Brown that delved into some of the effects of the NFL's hard hitting, and the efforts underway to protect players. But the bent of the story, as Dan Marino insisted on the set, was that the NFL is "way out in front" of the issue.

Coming to a Super Bowl pregame show for an in-depth, frank discussion of a subject like concussions, though, is perhaps foolhardy. As the two-tiered panel of analysts each weighed in, it was difficult to hear over the boozy, whooping fans bordering the Jackson Square set outside the Super Dome.

In an interview with CBS News' Scott Pelley, President Barack Obama again said that if he had a son interested in football, he would think before letting him play football, given what's now known about head injuries.

Whether head trauma would get much airtime during the game broadcast by Jim Nantz and Phil Simms was to be one of the broadcast's big questions.

Likely to be a major feature of the game's drama is the sibling match-up of the head coach brothers Jim and John Harbaugh. CBS, which plans to have two of its 60-plus cameras focused on each brother throughout the game, scored a set visit from the Harbaugh parents before the game.

Three years running, the NFL's championship game has set a viewership record, topped last year by NBC's broadcast to an average audience of 111.3 million people.

But ratings are a mere point of pride for CBS heading into kickoff. The ads have already been sold (some at more than $4 million a pop), so the network can now only hope to put forth its best broadcast and deflect as much of the Super Bowl glow to its other programs and its cable sports network.

The game is also being streamed live on both CBSSports.com and NFL.com, but CBS expects the broadcast to be the overwhelmingly more popular viewing choice.

After the game, CBS will run a new episode of the Thursday-night drama "Elementary" and a special broadcast of "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

(AP) ? Five men pleaded not guilty Saturday after being formally indicted in a special court on 13 charges, including rape and murder, in the fatal gang rape of a woman in a New Delhi bus, a lawyer said.

The men signed statements in the fast-track court saying they were innocent of all charges, said one of the men's lawyers. The lawyer cannot be identified under a gag order imposed by the court.

The men were indicted on 13 counts, including rape, murder, destroying evidence and kidnapping.

The court will begin hearing the evidence of witnesses on Tuesday. If convicted, the five men, who are in their 20s and 30s, could face the death penalty.

A sixth suspect, who is 17, will be tried in a juvenile court and could face a maximum sentence of three years in a reform facility if convicted.

Police say the victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding a bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests, sparking a debate about the treatment of women in India and highlighting the inability of law enforcement agencies to protect them.

Also on Saturday, women's groups across the country slammed a decision by the government to bring changes in India's rape laws through an ordinance.

A government panel set up after the outcry over the gang rape and weeks of street protests by students and women examined India's criminal justice system's treatment of violence against women. After examining more than 80,000 submissions, the panel, headed by retired Chief Justice J.S. Verma, came out with a 630-page report recommending amendments to the laws governing crimes against women.

On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Cabinet approved an ordinance to introduce stricter penalties for crimes against women, including death in extreme cases of rape. It also approved increasing the maximum seven-year sentence for rape to 20 years and imposing stiff punishments for crimes such as stalking, cyber stalking and voyeurism.

The ordinance has to be signed by President Pranab Mukherjee to become law. It would then have to be passed by Parliament within six months.

Women activists have accused the government of ignoring many key suggestions of the panel, including prosecuting army and paramilitary soldiers accused of sexual offenses and barring politicians facing rape charges from contesting elections.

"The ordinance is a complete betrayal of the faith people had reposed in the government," said Kavita Krishnan, a women's rights activist. "This is a fraud and the people are going to be out on the streets protesting this mockery of the Verma commission's recommendations."

Women's groups have appealed to Mukherjee not to sign the ordinance into law until it can be debated in Parliament.

"We are alarmed at the complete lack of transparency shown by the government. We call upon the president not to sign such an ordinance," five women's groups said in a statement.

The government said Saturday that a parliamentary committee would examine all the recommendations of the panel.

"The government is aware that we need stringent laws to protect women," said R. P. N. Singh, junior minister for home affairs. "We will discuss the recommendations and make further changes to the law that may be required."

First Lady Michelle Obama was one of millions watching Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, and like many, she stuck around during half time for Beyonce's big performance.

Obama -- who dined on Chesapeake crab cakes in honor of Baltimore and San Francisco cioppino stew with sourdough toast during the big game, according to White House pool reports -- tweeted her excitement about the singer's halftime show:

Beyonce has shown her pride for Obama in the past, once penning a letter to the first lady calling her "the ULTIMATE example of a truly strong African American woman."

Katherine Webb and Kate Upton will compete against each other in Lingerie Bowl 2013!

Traditionally played at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas and televised during Super Bowl halftime, in 2013 Lingerie Bowl X moves to a summertime showdown on Saturday, August 31, 2013.

BUT, in a special halftime show during the Super Bowl, Katherine Webb and Kate Upton will play against each other in a very special Lingerie Bowl 2013.

Las Vegas oddsmakers has the Upton with the edge ? picking her to beat Webb by two points (her points being larger than Webb?s).

lingerie_bowlH

The Lingerie Football League is a semi-football league that allows women to show off their talent and skills. ?President Obama, who recently told American boys not to play football, is publicly encouraging women to play Lingerie Football. ??I love the game and the uniforms are very pleasing to the eye,? the President reportedly told the White House press corps. ??I wish Michelle would play.?

lingerie_bowlE

For women who want to play semi-pro football this may be the only alternative to show off their very real athletic ability. Games are played at venues throughout a regular season in NFL, NHL and MLS arenas and stadiums.

lingerie_bowlG

Webb will be leading the Alabama Slims, while Upton is leading the Los Angeles Stack.

lingerie_bowlF

Lingerie games are played full contact, and consist of two 17-minute halves separated by a 15-minute halftime.

A majority of the players have a background in competitive athletics, while others have experience in other sports at the college and semi-pro level, such as track and field, softball, soccer, and basketball. A few also have experience in semi-pro football leagues.

Webb?s boyfriend, A.J. McCarron will be in the stands for the game ? and is hoping Brent Musburger notices him. ?Manti Te?o's fake girlfriend will be playing on Upton?s team.

Montana man made up sob story that got him pizza

(AP) ? A Montana man whose tearful reluctance to rob a pizza restaurant earned him free food apparently made up the sob story that gained him the clerk's sympathy.

David Randall Lacey, 35, entered a Papa John's pizza restaurant on Jan. 22 with a bandanna over his face and gave the clerk a note demanding money, Helena police said. He broke down crying and told the clerk he needed the money to support his wife and children, who were hungry. The clerk made him a large pepperoni pizza and some chicken wings as he waited, and the man left.

The Independent Record reports (http://bit.ly/14vlTZr) an investigation found Lacey has no children in Helena and changed his story when he saw how little money was in the cash register ? just $24.56, according to a police report.

Police received a tip that Lacey acknowledged his role in the incident and a clerk picked him out of a lineup. He was arrested Thursday on suspicion of felony robbery. He remained jailed Friday with bail set at $25,000.

Lacey told police he needed the money to buy food, court records said.
