Girl found clinging to floating body in NY lake

CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) ? Boaters rescued a 6-year-old girl from a small reservoir north of New York City after finding her clinging to the floating corpse of a family friend who had taken her to the water to cool off, officials said Tuesday.

The cause of the woman's death was not yet known and an autopsy was planned, said Carmel police Chief Michael Johnson. He said she could have drowned or suffered some kind of medical emergency while wading with the girl in Lake Gleneida.

The lake, about 730 yards at its widest, is part of New York City's water supply system, and swimming there is banned.

The woman was identified as Pamela Kaner, 59, of Brewster. Police said she was caring for the girl while the girl's mother ran an errand.

The girl, whose name was not released, told police that Kaner brought her into the water in the early afternoon Monday and was holding her when something went wrong.

The child had no life vest on and was crying as she clung to the woman's body in the middle of the lake late Monday afternoon, said Carter Strickland, commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. The agency owns the lake.

Two men and a woman in a rowboat heard the girl crying for help around 5 p.m. and found her holding on to Kaner's body, Strickland said.

The boaters pulled the girl from the water, brought her to shore and called police, officials said. She was treated at a hospital, but was not seriously harmed. Kaner's body was retrieved by firefighters, who paddled out in a commandeered boat.

No swimming or wading and no boats with engines are allowed on Lake Gleneida.

"She shouldn't have been in the lake," Johnson said.

The shore of the lake, which abuts the main road of the hamlet of Carmel, is littered with rowboats, most chained or cabled to trees. Johnson said the DEP grants permits for the boats. Signs on the shore say, "Recreation by permit. Entry for other purposes prohibited."

On Tuesday afternoon only ducks and gulls were on the water.

Kerry Browne of Carmel, a house renovator, said, "On a nice day like this, anybody would like to jump in the lake, but you know the rules. He said he hoped the girl would be able to recover from "holding on to a body like that."

Johnson said that in his experience, "It's very unusual when a drowning victim doesn't sink. The body usually goes to the bottom and pops back up when it decomposes."

Jeanne Buck of Patterson, who works in Carmel, said she saw a commotion Monday on the shore.

"I saw a woman carry a little girl up from the shore. I don't know but it looked like it was her mother."

For the first time in history, a wild marine fish species has been identified with skin cancer off the coast of Australia.

Caught on the Great Barrier Reef, coral trout have been discovered with large black spots on their skin, now identified as cancerous melanomas. One researcher documented that 15% of these fish found on the reef show signs of skin cancer. The percentage may even be higher due to the fact that some fish may have died due to illness or consumed by predators.

Researchers state that melanomas on the skin of these fish were likely due to the UV radiation and the closeness of the fish species to the hole in the ozone layer over parts of Antarctica and Australia. (No wonder I got ?surfer?s eye? induced by extreme sun exposure in my year abroad in Australia..the sun really is MORE intense there!) Hence it is no wonder that Australia has the highest?occurrence?of skin cancer in the entire world. That boils down to the fact that 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed before that age of 70. Very unfortunate?wear your sunscreen Aussies!

Alright back to the fish- the researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science were on the reef doing a survey of shark prey, i.e. coral trout. They saw the discoloration on the fish and after examining it under a microscope, discovered ?it was cancerous tumors.

?Studying disease in wild fish populations is very time-consuming and costly so it?s hard to say how long the disease has been around. However, what we do know is that it is now widespread in the coral trout population effecting three different species of this type of fish and we would not be surprised to find it in other species as well.? -Dr. Sweet

The fish were caught off of Heron Island (where I did?research on tube worm larvae!) and One Tree Island?- which make up the southern portion of the Great Barrier Marine Park. 136 fish were caught, resulting with 20 (15%) showing signs of skin cancer.

Even though this is just the first published report about fish with skin cancer, I?m sure the?occurrence?isn?t new. Some fishermen trace it back to as early as the 1980?s. The diagnosed fish didn?t show signs of illness, but that also doesn?t mean that many of them have already died from the cancer once it got invasive. Questions and answers are still yet to be answered pertaining to skin cancer in fish- I?ll try and keep you posted as best as I can on this issue.

More Evidence That Exercise Helps Fight Diabetes

MONDAY, Aug. 6 (HealthDay News) -- People with diabetes who boost their level of physical activity can reduce their risk of premature death, according to a new study.

And a separate study found that weight training alone may reduce the risk of developing diabetes in the first place.

The first study, which involved nearly 6,000 people with diabetes, found that those who were moderately physically active had the lowest risk of death.

Leisure-time physical activity -- such as biking, gardening and housework as well as walking -- was also associated with lower risk of death, found researcher Diewertje Sluik of the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrucke, and colleagues.

In the other study, which included more than 32,000 men, researchers found weight training alone -- without aerobics -- can help prevent type 2 diabetes, possibly by increasing muscle mass and improving insulin sensitivity.

However, a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise provided the most preventive benefit.

Both studies were published online Aug. 6 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Until now, previous studies have reported that aerobic exercise is of major importance for type 2 diabetes prevention," Anders Grontved, lead author of the weight-training study, said in a Harvard news release.

"But many people have difficulty engaging in or adhering to aerobic exercise. These new results suggest that weight training, to a large extent, can serve as an alternative to aerobic exercise for type 2 diabetes prevention," added Grontved, a visiting researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health and a doctoral student in exercise epidemiology at the University of Southern Denmark.

Using information on participants' weekly weight training and aerobic exercise habits from 1990 to 2008, the researchers found that men who weight train on a regular basis could reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by up to 34 percent.

Even a small amount of weight training helped. Men who lifted weights for just up to 59 minutes a week reduced their risk for diabetes by 12 percent.

Meanwhile, weight training for 60 to 149 minutes reduced the risk for type 2 diabetes by 25 percent and the men who lifted for at least 150 minutes reduced their risk by 34 percent, the investigators found.

"This study provides clear evidence that weight training has beneficial effects on diabetes risk over and above aerobic exercise, which are likely to be mediated through increased muscle mass and improved insulin sensitivity," study senior author Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, said in the news release. "To achieve the best results for diabetes prevention, resistance training can be incorporated with aerobic exercise."

The men who engaged in aerobic exercise for up to 59 minutes weekly reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 7 percent. Between 60 and 149 minutes of aerobics reduced risk by 31 percent, and at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise reduced their risk by 52 percent, according to the report.

The combination of weight training and aerobic exercise was the most beneficial, the researchers said. Men who did more than 150 minutes of aerobics as well as at least 150 minutes of weight training per week had a 59 percent lower risk for type 2 diabetes.

The study authors said more research is needed to confirm these findings and determine if they apply to women as well as men.

CHICAGO (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who suffered a stroke in January, released a second video message Sunday showing improved mobility and speech and detailing his work to find a replacement for U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.

"I wanted to make sure we could update the people of Illinois on my progress against this stroke," the 52-year-old Kirk said in the video. "The progress I have made has been very encouraging ? learning to walk again and improving my speaking skills."

The three-minute video (http://bit.ly/NuuErR ) features footage of the Republican walking on a treadmill and up stairs under the close supervision of a rehabilitation specialist but without a cane he had previously used. It shows him walking faster than a previous video, aided by a harness extending above his shoulders. He speaks at times with a stutter and sometimes struggles to form words during the video, which was filmed both at his Fort Sheridan, Ill., home and at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Kirk said he recently finished a nine-week mobility study at the institute where he walked nearly 15 miles and climbed 145 flights of stairs. He said a high point of his recovery was walking up all the stairs of the institute and that it was good to be at home during his recovery. He was moved to outpatient rehabilitation in May.

The senator suffered a major stroke on Jan. 21 and underwent emergency surgery that included the temporary removal of a 4-by-8-inch piece of his skull to allow for swelling. Surgeons also removed two small pieces of brain tissue destroyed by the stroke.

Doctors have said the stroke was expected to limit movement on his left side and perhaps in his facial muscles, though they expected him to make a full mental recovery.

The video footage released Sunday largely shows movement only of Kirk's right hand: making a phone call, sipping coffee, using a rail along stairs and gesturing. His left side, mainly his shoulder, appears to droop lower than the right.

Kirk said he's in touch with his office several times daily by phone and email and is helping Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, find a replacement for Fitzgerald, who announced his resignation in May after more than a decade.

Kirk said that he and Durbin have formed a bipartisan panel to review applications. Generally, U.S. senators recommend nominees to the president and it takes months for confirmation once a nomination is sent to the Senate.

"I'm working with Senator Durbin right now to make sure we have a U.S. Attorney who is just as good as Patrick Fitzgerald," Kirk said. He added that Fitzgerald was "one of the best public servants we have ever seen in the state of Illinois."

The video also shows footage of Kirk's visits with Illinois Republican U.S. Reps. Judy Biggert and Bob Dold and Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

"It's been really touching to have these visits from colleagues who come all the way from Washington," Kirk said. "They have been really morale boosters."

Obama embraces health care law after court ruling

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, emboldened by the Supreme Court's affirmation of his health care overhaul, is now embracing the law while campaigning for re-election, just as Republican rival Mitt Romney steps back from it.

Obama sees a second chance to sell voters on the issue despite deep skepticism about it from many people. Romney is avoiding answering hard questions about how he would tackle health care, and thus missing the chance to energize voters who oppose the law.

Democrats say the president always planned to stress health care if the court upheld the law. A month after the ruling, he and his team are focused on promoting individual parts of the law that have proved more popular than the sum. The campaign is targeting its efforts on important groups of voters, including women and Hispanics, who, Obama aides say, will benefit greatly once the law takes full effect.

Before the decision, Obama did mention the law in campaign events. But the case he made to voters was hardly vigorous, especially considering the amount of time he dedicated to overhaul during his first year in year in office.

The primary focus of his campaign speeches remains the economy, the race's dominant issue. But the Supreme Court's favorable ruling appears to have freed Obama to speak about the health law more passionately and emphatically than before the case was decided.

His campaign also is running a television advertisement in eight of the most contested states that criticizes Romney for opposing mandatory health insurance coverage for contraception; that provision is in Obama's overhaul. A health care-focused Spanish-language ad is running in Nevada, Colorado and Florida.

"The Supreme Court has spoken," Obama told a cheering crowd at a recent fundraiser in New Orleans. "We are going to implement this law."

During an event near Seattle, Obama said passing the law was "the right thing to do" and he highlighted specific parts of the overhaul that his campaign believes resonate well with voters.

"Young people will be able to stay on their parents' plans till they're 26 years old," Obama said. "Women won't be getting charged more than men, and you'll be getting free preventive care. Seniors will see the cost of their prescription drugs go down. If you don't have health insurance we're going to help you get it."

His campaign has been aggressive in selling the health overhaul to women.

During a speech to female bloggers Thursday, the president said he's "not going to give any ground to those who would deny women their own health care choices."

Romney, who declared the overhaul a "bad law" after the court ruled, has become less aggressive and less expansive in his discussion of health care.

At some recent events, Romney hasn't talked about the issue at all. On Friday, while campaigning in Las Vegas, he made one brief mention of "Obamacare", pledging to get rid of it and return health care "to a setting of personal responsibility."

Romney hasn't featured health care prominently in any television ads since the ruling June 28, but has made a few high-profile comments. The Republican was booed repeatedly during a July speech to the NAACP when he pledged to repeal the law if elected.

He "has and will continue to discuss the president's failures on health care," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said, adding that the candidate "will deliver a new direction and will take action to repeal and replace Obamacare."

In a deadlocked race, Romney is hampered by his support for a health care measure similar to Obama's while he was Massachusetts governor. Also, Romney's calls for repeal raise complex questions about what he would do in place of the law; those are questions Romney has struggled to answer.

For Obama, there's a political risk in fully embracing his health care overhaul because the law remains unpopular with many.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted in early July showed 47 percent of Americans supporting the law and 47 percent opposing it.

Yet the Obama campaign has been heartened by polls suggesting many people are ready to put the health care debate behind them.

For example, 56 percent of those questioned said they wanted to see the law's critics move on to other issues and stop their efforts to block the law from taking effect, according to a poll in early July by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Half of independent voters were among those who wanted to see lawmakers move on to other issues.

"Tens of millions of Americans are already reaping the benefits of health reform, and, now that the court has ruled, want to turn the page from the partisan fights of the last two years over its repeal," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager.

The way Obama and Romney have approached health care following the Supreme Court ruling isn't necessarily trickling down to state and local elections. For some Democrats, particularly those in more moderate or conservative districts, supporting the president's health care overhaul remains a significant electoral liability. For some Republicans, especially those in the House, running to repeal the law can be a guaranteed way to energize supporters.
