Sources: US envoy to Afghanistan to step down

Veteran U.S. diplomat Ryan Crocker is expected to step down soon from his post as President Barack Obama's envoy to Afghanistan, departing the U.S. mission in Kabul as the United States negotiates a host of challenges on its course out of the long, costly war.

The Obama administration is considering Deputy Ambassador James Cunningham to replace Crocker when he leaves the post as early as this month, sources familiar with the matter said.

It was not immediately clear why the widely respected diplomat was leaving.

Crocker, who came out of retirement to become ambassador in Kabul in July 2011, has led diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan at a time when the White House has focused on reducing the U.S. presence there ? and on doing so without letting the country slide back into civil war.

Crocker was one of the high-level officials discussing Afghanistan's future at a NATO summit that concluded on Monday in Obama's home town of Chicago.

There, Western leaders refined their plans to pull most of their troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and put local forces in charge.

At the core of Crocker's job has been maintaining a difficult, and at times openly hostile, U.S. relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and overseeing civilian efforts to combat corruption and poverty in Afghanistan.

Crocker has anchored the U.S. diplomatic presence at a time when Western sites ? and even the American embassy building itself ? have been the target by Taliban militants.

Crocker has also urged the Afghan government to make reforms that could help it secure billions of dollars in future outside aid.

The appointment of a diplomat of Crocker's stature in 2011 was seen as another sign of Obama's desire to turn around a campaign that was receiving insufficient attention and resources for years ? and of his determination to steer the U.S. mission there toward a conclusion.

Obama, Karzai push post-2014 vision of Afghanistan

News of Crocker's departure comes only weeks after Cameron Munter, the U.S. ambassador in Islamabad, informed his staff he would be leaving his post in coming months.

In yet another diplomatic departure as Obama's current term enters its final stretch, Reuters reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's top diplomat for the Middle East, Jeffrey Feltman, will soon leave for a top post at the United Nations.

Tough Iraq posting
Crocker earned respect in his earlier role as U.S. ambassador to Iraq from 2007-2009, when a surge in U.S. forces was credited with helping to calm a country convulsed by sectarian violence.

The post in Baghdad ? when suicide bombings and mortar attacks were a daily occurrence ? appeared to tax Crocker's health. He has also served as ambassador to Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon.

Report: Taliban, Afghan troops forge agreements

As a young diplomat, he worked at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut when it was bombed in 1982 and when an American Marine barracks was attacked the following year.

Crocker retired from the government in April 2009, becoming dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Cunningham, who would need to be nominated and confirmed by the Senate if he were to become the permanent U.S. envoy, was ambassador to Israel before he came to Kabul last year.

Mystery Samsung phone with Snapdragon S4 pops up in benchmarks, may or may not be Verizon's Galaxy S III

Image

While pre-release benchmarks have a very hit or miss record for clues as to what future devices will bring, they almost always raise eyebrows. Nowhere is that more true than in a round of NenaMark2 testing uncovered this weekend: a previously unknown Samsung SCH-i535 for Verizon has tipped up sporting a 1.5GHz, dual-core Snapdragon S4 instead of one of Samsung's own chips, like the Exynos 4 Quad. Given that the SCH-i515 is the model badge for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus, it's not a great leap in logic to speculate that this is a custom version of the Galaxy S III. It's entirely possible that something else might fit the bill, but knowing that Samsung has used Snapdragons itself to include 4G before and that HTC just recently switched up the One X with an S4 to give it LTE on North American networks, we may be looking at the compromise Samsung needs to make to get its 4.8-inch gigantophone on Big Red.

94% Marley

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (74) | Rotten (5)

Sprinkled with riffs, concert footage and home videos, the family-authorized documentary does what the artist usually did: When in doubt, return to the beat.

Macdonald supplies some interesting and novel details about the musician's life and art, though the movie's narrative arc and documentary methods are totally predictable.

Bob Marley wrote the same song about 8,000 times, and the documentary "Marley" makes sure to include each version.

This is a life story worth telling, and "Marley" does it much justice. Marley may or may not have been perfect, but he was certainly fascinating.

It's hard to imagine audiences who don't know much about the man sticking around for more than a few minutes of this. And they're the ones who need to know about him most of all.

The movie has enormous force - because it's about a genius, yes, but even more so because of the intelligence, passion and wit of the people who knew Marley.

For a movie this long, it's too bad there isn't more footage of Marley in performance, joyously bringing music to the world.

...likely as close as we'll ever come to a definitive film biography of this gnomic figure.

Macdonald effectively lets the talking heads and the music explain the longevity of Marley's appeal.

Recounts a short life that seemed to straddle worlds and eras, and perhaps the definitive portrait will never be filmed or written. Until it is, though, there's always the music.

A truly human portrait of an extraordinary life.

Marley is a terrific documentary. It goes beyond one figure, and captures the essence of life itself. The film is as infectious and spiritual as one of his songs.

Good documentaries make us want to know more about their subject. But great ones like Marley don't need to.

It's certainly comprehensive, even if -- at two and a half hours long -- not exactly concise.

If you'd asked me a month ago how Marley had died, I might have cluelessly suggested a drug overdose.

Chronicles the life and times of the first musical superstar from the third world to gain a global audience, with the reggae singer's posthumous Legend album selling some 25 million copies.

In the end, it's just good, comprehensive storytelling, a film that justifies the legend rather than hypes it.

Gradually, the dreadlocks, the music and the cloud of ganja smoke come together to form as recognisable an image as that of the equally short-lived Che Guevara.

The film never shows us Marley in a complete performance. It's hard to understand the magic of a man whose most awesome moments are reduced to edited snippets.

It smartly captures his dynamic personality both through the words of those who knew him, and more importantly, through his enduring music.

Marley finally gives the world an authoritative, nonhagiographic survey of Marley's life.

This is an appropriately exhaustive study of the man and his music, its only failing is the absence of a decent political analysis of Rastafari and the beliefs that informed Marley to the end of his life.

It's a meticulously researched, consistently interesting documentary about superstar Bob Marley - and it makes two-and-a-half hours pass by in a flash.

Spooner's Spin: On Same-Sex Marriage

? ? ?Vice President Joe Biden recently tried to speak about President Obama's feelings about Gay Marriages.? He was not able to clearly distinguish between his own position the President.? This is another example of the difficulty many American are having trying to properly evaluate the rights of certain behaviors that individuals have because laws or courts say they have and other rights which are perceived to be endowed by the Creator.?

?? ? The President says that his opinions on the matter has evolved. My own opinion has both evolved and devolved over the years.? For individuals who are gay, the desire to have both their nature and their relationships with each other legitimized is no less than human.? They did not cause themselves to feel and be urged to act as they do.? They are products of time, nature and the hands of God just as are heterosexual individuals. ?

?? ? Heterosexuality propagates the human species. ? The benefits of homosexual relationships, however, is not clearly evidenced in nature, and any future benefits are difficult to conjecture.? We therefore cannot predict whether socially accepted same-sex unions eventually will be an asset or a detriment to the future of mankind.

For example, time could prove that, while heterosexuals can have children, homosexuals will be better at rearing them because they appreciate them more.

?? ? But even as members of the gay and lesbian community want their feelings and needs acknowledged and legitimized by members of the religious community, they must understand why many people of faith who find such behavior to be contrary to the teachings of that faith have trouble embracing gay unions.? People whose religious faith is firm, whose lives and convictions are inextricably intertwined in a relationship with God cannot divorce themselves from the convictions of that faith just to accommodate people whose nature puts them, through no fault of their own, at odds with that faith.

?? ? The evolution of attitudes must be a two-way proposition.? It is no different from the evolution that must occur for people of one faith to conclude that, if there is one God, He must be the God of all faiths.? Just as heterosexuals must be considerate of the need for homosexual relationships to be legitimized, members of the homosexual community must recognize the possible negative consequences if a society satisfies their needs by ignoring the teachings of its faith which are the foundations of its existence. ?

? ? The sexual urges some priests showed toward young boys cannot be made right just because the priests' urges were strong, natural and beyond their ability to control.? The same can be said of sexual behavior of teachers with students, and pastors with members of their congregations. ? Strong natural urges do not justify such actions, despite any mutual consent.? And there are many other human urges which our society expects member to control.? Otherwise, nothing will be wrong.?

?? ? Many people of faith who condemn homosexuals, their relationships and their desire to have their unions called marriages accept adultery, bearing false witness (lying), covetousness (greed) and other behaviors that are contrary to the teachings of their faith.? The gay community is asking: If members of the Christian faith accept or ignore these behaviors which are contrary to the Judea-Christian teaching, why object to their condition, their feelings and their need for meaningful and loving relationships.? After all, same-sex unions are more consistent with Biblical teachings that individuals should have only one partner.?

?? ? Love makes people of faith to be considerate of the needs of the gay communication, but perhaps cannot compel heterosexuals to believe the same-sex unions should be labeled marriage they don't believe that. To many Christians, marriage refers to the union of a man and a woman.? The union of two people of the same gender has to be something else.? But being something else does not mean something less, anymore than being being male or female means being less than the opposite gender.

?? ? I previously suggestion:? Marriage is for Mixed couples. Larriage for Lesbians? and Garriage for gays. with each having the same legal standing.? A woman does not have to be called a man in order to be equal to a man, equally respected and have the same rights.? Gays may be putting too much emphasis of what the union is called.? Not all roses are red.? ? ?

?? ? Homosexual Americans cannot help who or what they are and how they feel about each other anymore than heterosexuals can control how they feel about members of the opposite sex.? Denying them the right to unite in what they choose to be called a marriage forces them to live together in unmarried and sinful unions.? (Remember, gay people also can be people of faith.)? Most such people who genuinely embrace a religious faith consider such living together with sexual engagement of unmarried people to be sinful.? Granting legal same-sex unions the title marriage, to them, implies divine approval.? It also is far less a moral offense than attempting to either force gay and lesbian couples to deny the nature of their sexuality and to live in relationships which even they consider to be sinful. ?

? ? In the absence of God's revealing different answers to us in this age where most Americans accept the fact that homosexuality is not a choice,? He likely expects us to error on the side of love.? That means by facilitating and wishing happy, loving and faithful unions for these couples, not being on the side of pettiness about what same-sex unions should be called.

?? ? Every person of faith who eventually has come around to support gay marriage has had that change in attitude evolve.? Give President Obama time.? But also grant him and others of faith the right to never be persuaded that the word "marriage" should be attached to what should otherwise be legally, socially, and respectfully accepted unions. ? ?

?? ? Just as most people of one religious faith do not dislike people of different faiths, similar feelings apply about those whose sexual urges and preferences don't conform to social or biological norms.? ? .?
