In Mary Washington's time, breast cancer was little understood, widely

Genevieve Bugay will talk about Mary Washington?s breast cancer tomorrow.

When tourists visit the Mary Washington House tomorrow, Genevieve Bugay, the costumed guide, plans to tell them that they have arrived on a sad day.

?Mrs. Washington has just died,? Bugay will say.

Saturday is the 223rd anniversary of Mary Washington?s death. Those who tend her home and memory plan to mark the occasion from noon to 3 p.m. with recollections of the woman and the disease that killed her.

?She suffered dreadfully for some months with breast cancer,? Bugay said.

Mary Washington died in her bed at 3 p.m. at her white-frame home at 1200 Charles Street. She was 81.

Family members were with her at the end, though her son, George, the nation?s first president, was in New York City, the new seat of government.?Burgess Ball, a family member, wrote to George that day to tell him of his mother?s death. For the last 15 days, Mary Washington was unable to speak, Ball wrote. For the last five days she was ?asleep.?

Bugay, who usually serves as site coordinator at the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, will move to the Mary Washington House tomorrow to receive mourners.?She has prepared for the day by studying Washington family correspondence and medical texts from the period. She has learned that, like today, breast cancer in the Colonial period was widely known, little understood and often fatal.

Bugay said it appears that Mrs. Washington suffered from an advanced case of the disease. When her doctor wrote about her to Dr. Benjamin Rush of Philadelphia, one of the most famous physicians in the colonies, Rush advised comfort measures.

Apply poultices of opium and camphor, Rush advised. Wash the infected breast with a solution of red clover, he said, and give her cocktails of wine and bark.

Mrs. Washington?s breast was apparently swollen and discolored, and the tumor may have broken through the surface of the skin. She was probably in pain.

In one letter, her daughter, Betty Lewis, told George Washington, ?I?m sorry to inform you my mother?s breast still continues bad. God only knows how it will end.?

That's the word today from TechCrunch, which reports that Verizon has scheduled a vacation blackout from Sept. 21 to Sept. 30. "Big deal," you might be saying. "What does a vacation ban have to do with a new iPhone?" Simple: If the last couple years are any indication, the iPhone 5 launch will be a big, glitzy, buzz-saturated event. It will be an all-hands-on-deck situation for Verizon employees.?

The standard caveats apply: Apple hasn't confirmed the existence of a new iPhone, let alone when it might launch. In fact, we don't even know if this thing will be called the iPhone 5 ? it might be called the iPhone XRPQ, for all we know. Still, Apple releases a new iPhone every year, and since the last iPhone launched in October of 2011, it makes sense that the next iteration would be shipping this fall.?

Apple is widely expected to actually take the wraps off the iPhone 5 at an event on Sept. 12. Pre-orders would open shortly after that, with brick-and-mortar stores actually putting the phone on sale on the 21st of September.?

"If we travel back a bit and examine the historical timeline from Apple?s announcement, to pre-order, to launch, the dates all seem to match up," writes Jordan Crook of TechCrunch. "Last year Apple announced the iPhone 4S on a?Tuesday, October 4th. The phone went up for pre-order on that Friday, October 7, and was available in stores on?Friday, October 14, a week later."?

So what will the new iPhone look like? Well, it will likely have a larger screen than previous models, and a slimmer chassis. Expect also a new headphone jack and dock connecter, possibly with 19 pins instead of 30.?

2012 marks Matildas? captain Melissa Barbieri?s tenth year in the Australian National Team.? A decade at the top of the Australian women?s game.? A decade of being a dedicated, hardworking and well-tuned athlete in touch with her body; or so she thought.

?It was pretty interesting.? Playing in Japan I had few stomach issues and a bit of lethargy,? Barbieri recalled.

?A couple of the girls, Walshy [Sarah Walsh] in particular, were like ?Maybe you?re pregnant??. ?It was more of a joke than anything so I just brushed it off.?

However that offhand comment stayed with her and upon return to her home city of Melbourne, the 32 year old consulted her physician.

?I pretty much found out then and there in the doctor?s office.?

?I called my husband and he was quite as?shocked as I was.? I found out that I was already 11 ? weeks pregnant.?

Those previous three months had seen her lead the national team in a two match international series against New Zealand and a one match test against world champions Japan.

While initially surprised Barbieri and her husband of five years, Geoff Hudson, we also delighted.? Motherhood has always been on the agenda for her as she stated to Daily Life?s Kathryn Wicks earlier this year.? Although, she admitted, maybe not this close on the horizon.

?We had made the decision to start having children but when I found out we had a few internationals this year, I was going to put it off until after then,? Barbieri said.

?We are kind of lucky in a sense it happened so quickly.? When these things happen you kind of think ?okay this is fate telling me it?s the right time?.?

The revelation to both her families, her very close Italian family and the Matildas family, was met with great joy.

?They cried,? she recollected of her announcement to her parents.? ?Even though this will be their sixth grandchild, I am the only daughter in the family so it?s a little bit different for them.?

?It?s a very exciting time for them.? I can?t get my Dad off the phone when I speak to him!?

?Now Tommy [Tom Sermanni] is an old hat at this really.? He knows what he is doing now so that made it easier for me.?

MOTHERHOOD AND THE MATILDAS

Barbieri?s news comes on the back of midfielder Heather Garriock?s announcement of her pregnancy earlier this year.? Garriock, who is due to give birth in the next month or so, and Barbieri have both expressed their desire to return to the national team after their birth.?

While some footballers have managed to return, family and women?s football is an area Barbieri admits the Matildas can improve upon.

?I think it has always been something that we have been lacking in the Matildas.? That sense of motherhood, that you can come back after having children,? she stated.

?Players have done it in the past but they have been doing it off their own bat but now we have some strategies in place for the future.?

One of those strategies yet to be arranged will be the remuneration aspect.? With less than a year left to run on the current Matildas Collective Bargaining Agreement (expires 30 June 2013), it will be a new dimension of the next Agreement.

?It will definitely be in our next of bargaining agreements.? We have to make sure that we are well covered as a team and that the FFA covered as well.?

MAKING THE MOST OF DOWN TIME

Since her debut back in 2002, Barbieri has never missed an international and until this year, due to recovery from an ankle reconstruction, had never missed a national training camp.

The enforced down time will take some getting used to but there are certainly plenty of avenues available with Barbieri in the last 12 months starting to spread her wings beyond the playing arena.

Currently half way through the 18 month coaching A Licence, she is looking to use the break to continue to build her coaching credentials.? Also on the agenda is continuing with her burgeoning media career.

This year she became the first female sideline commentator for Fox Sports? A-League coverage.? The appearances have been followed up by several seats on ABC?s Offsiders couch alongside the likes of Gerard Whately and Francis Leach.

And with a former Matilda Alicia Ferguson vacating the co-commentator booth alongside Peter Wilkins, there is another tantalising opening for Barbieri on the ABC W-League coverage.

?I would love to work with the ABC there and I would also like with Fox on the A-League.?

?Both of them have expressed interest and if all the pieces fit then hopefully that would come about in the summer.?

?There are so many ways that I want to give back to the game so I am sure I will keep myself busy until I return.?

THE END GOAL

While other plans are up in the air, one thing Melissa Barbieri is emphatic on is that she will be returning to football.

A recent meeting with 3 time gold medal winning US Women?s National Team captain Christie Rampone has made her even more determined.

?I have found some inspiration from her?, said Barbieri.

?She [Rampone]?is 37 and she has just captained the US to another Olympic gold and she has done it with two children.?

?I just want to be able to come back and get back to full fitness and vie for contention for the national team.?

?Whether I play or not, that is up to the coach at the time.?

That ambition means there will be no resting up during her pregnancy.

?I have a strict eating plan so eating for two will not be a good excuse!? she laughed.

?I have consulted with a few doctors and they say keeping active is actually better for you and the child so I am going to continue training up until I feel discomfort.?

?Right now I will doing a lot of ball work and during the latter stages of the pregnancy I will be doing more yoga to keep my strength up.?

While pregnancy was once considered the death knell to an female athlete?s career, interestingly evidence has arisen in recent years that it may actually be a positive for female athletes.

During pregnancy blood volume rises about 60% resulting in more oxygen carried to the muscles mirroring the effects of blood doping.? While blood volume returns to normal within four to eight weeks after giving birth, research is being performed into how training during pregnancy can enhance performance post-birth.

That was some good news that was imparted by Rampone to Barbieri.

?She said that you will probably find that you are actually better than you were pre-pregnancy so I am looking forward to that!?

Cradle of Rome Review

Build Rome from the ground up in Cradle of Rome, a different kind of match 3 objects Mac game. After completing the levels you will get points for building supplies, food and money to make your own Roman city. You can enjoy seeing the town and village people come together as you progress in this game.

The play is a swap items to match 3 or more of one kind of object together. Each level is timed by the water jug on the right of the screen. The matching is fairly easy in the lower levels but does get more challenging later in the play. You need to make matches over the marble plaques to destroy them. The blocks are the chains locking the pieces until you make a match over them.

Cradle of Rome is a fun and enjoyable match 3 game with building of the city as a side entertainment. The only fault I see in the match play is that the stone for building and the silver coin is so similar in color, it slows your speed of play a little. Other than that, I think the game will be enjoyable for both children and casual gamers alike.

The Gate of Hell (Devil's Trap):

There is an original gate to hell; a natural rock formation, a gorge on the Sweetwater River in Wyoming. The site is significant in the history of western pioneers, and was a major landmark on the Oregon Trail. The earliest surviving photograph of this landmark was made in 1858 by Samuel C. Mills, a photographer with the Captain Simpson Expedition. According to legend an extremely ancient and powerful demon had been locked behind a Devil's Gate, a demon so powerful that even Lucifer feared it. These legends also state that the gate can only be reached if one is in possession of its key, though the tales are very vague and thus far no one has correctly deciphered the clues. That is until the mid 1800s when the famous (some might say infamous), Samuel Colt discovered the answer to this age old mystery. One only has to walk between the halves of the formation and the Devil's Gate will appear. However, The gate will only appear with the physical presence of the key. But what is this key?

Here?s the whole story: The Roth 401(k) concept was created in 2001 by the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA), but it wasn?t available until 2006. As with your regular 401(k) plan, contributions to a Roth 401(k) plan grow on a tax-deferred basis. However, unlike a regular 401(k), elective deferrals aren?t made with pretax dollars. The amounts you contribute are subject to current tax. ?

With a Roth 401(k) plan, you come out ahead on the back end: If you qualify, distributions from the plan are 100% federal income tax-free. In comparison, the distributions from a regular 401(k) plan are taxable at ordinary income rates.

To qualify for the tax-free deal, distributions from a Roth 401(k) must be made: after you reach age 59?; on account of death or disability; or to pay for ?first-time homebuyer expenses? (up to a lifetime limit of $10,000).

In other words, the rules for qualified (tax-free) distributions from a Roth 401(k) mirror the tax rules for qualified Roth IRA distributions.

The contribution limits for traditional 401(k) plans and Roth 401(k) plans are the same. So, you can contribute up to $17,000 to either type of account for 2012 ($22,500 if age 50 or older). Alternatively, you can divide your contribution between the two types of plans, when it is allowed by the plan administrator. ?

The availability of contributing to Roth IRAs phases out for certain high-income taxpayers, but there is no income restriction on Roth 401(k) contributions. So this may represent a new opportunity to cash in on Roth-type benefits.

Tip: For employers, Roth 401(k)s create extra administrative burdens. Weigh the benefits for employees against the hassle.
