PFT: Smith told Newton to stop sulking

Cincinnati Bengals v Atlanta FalconsGetty Images

Now that free-agent receiver Chad Johnson has pleaded no contest to charges of domestic violence, Johnson is subject to discipline under the personal-conduct policy.

But a source with knowledge of the procedure explains to PFT that Johnson likely won?t be disciplined until he returns to the NFL.

That said, if a team is interested in signing him and wants to know if he is facing a suspension, a decision could be made prior to Johnson signing a contract.

If Johnson had been issued a suspension before he was cut by the Dolphins, he could have served the suspension while unemployed.? Not that he?s unemployed but has yet to be officially suspended, the league apparently isn?t inclined to suspend him until he has a team.

Regardless of how it all plays out, the current posture could make it harder for Johnson to get a job with another NFL team.? Since he?s still a member of the union, he should push the league to issue a punishment regardless of whether he?s on a team, so that if he?s suspended he can serve it before, not after, he signs a contract.

That said, it?s not clear Johnson would even be suspended.? The policy primarily is aimed at addressing repeat offenders.? Johnson is a first-time offender.? Given the nature of the offense, however, the NFL could decide to take action.

Either way, it would be fair to Johnson to make the decision as soon as possible, so that he and any interested teams will know his status.

Tech Thursday: Chic New Bags for Your Camera ... - Travel + Leisure

09.20.12

montgomst_family_grey-1-croppedjpg

Finding a good camera bag that is both functional and stylish is a seemingly near-impossible feat, at least in my findings. They?re always bulky, vinyl, sacks, with nothing new or fashionable brought to the table. Yeah, I get it: its primary purpose is to organize and protect your camera and accessories, but why does it have to be so dull? I like a little flare, okay?

So I was pretty excited when I saw the newest line of Acme Made camera bags, which just hit the market this earlier this week. They?re functional, good-looking bags, and come in four different sizes, depending on how much equipment you?ll be carting around with you. You can buy them in olive green and grey, but I?m partial to the grey one, which has a brushed nickel look to it, and a delightfully surprising burst of lime green on the inside. The internal compartments are adjustable and/or collapsible, so you can customize it to suit your needs.

www.acmemade.com; from $29.99.

Angling for gold: Alternative description of atomic level gold bonding

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A study on how gold atoms bond to other atoms using a model that takes into account bonds direction has been carried out by physicist Marie Backman from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues. These findings, which are about to be published in The European Physical Journal B, are a first step toward better understanding how gold binds to other materials through strong, so-called covalent, bonds.

What scientists need is an empirical model, based on a so-called potential, that describes the gold-gold bond in a reliable way. Most previous models only accounted for interactions in the spherical electron density around the atom. Although it is suitable to describe bonds between gold atom pairs, it is not adequate to describe how surface gold atoms bond to other materials. In such a case, the density of interacting electrons is no longer spherical.

Indeed, bond angles matter when gold binds to other materials. Thus, the authors used a model based on potentials with angular dependence, referred to as Tersoff potential. It offers a compromise between including bond directionality, which is needed for covalent bonds, and keeping the computer time needed for the simulations low.

The authors used theoretical and computational analysis to study gold atoms interacting with their neighbours. They fitted their potential functions to the most important observed characteristics of gold, such as gold atoms' lattice constant, binding energy and elastic constants. Thanks to such potential functions they were then able to describe bonding in atomistic simulations. This involves, first, determining the forces on each atom based on their relative positions and second solving equations of motion, to show how the atoms move, on a very short time scale.

Building on this model, future work could, for example, involve the development of cross potentials for gold nanoparticles and nanorods in a matrix, typically used in biomedical imaging and nanophotonics.

Women speak less when they're outnumbered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? New experiments in group decision making show that having a seat at the table is very different than having a voice.

Scholars at Brigham Young University and Princeton examined whether women speak less than men when a group collaborates to solve a problem. In most groups that they studied, the time that women spoke was significantly less than their proportional representation -- amounting to less than 75 percent of the time that men spoke.

The new study is published by the top academic journal in political science, American Political Science Review.

"Women have something unique and important to add to the group, and that's being lost at least under some circumstances," said Chris Karpowitz, the lead study author and a political scientist at BYU.

There is an exception to this rule of gender participation, however. The time inequality disappeared when researchers instructed participants to decide by a unanimous vote instead of majority rule.

Results showed that the consensus-building approach was particularly empowering for women who were outnumbered by men in their group. Study co-author Tali Mendelberg of Princeton says these findings apply to many different settings.

"In school boards, governing boards of organizations and firms, and legislative committees, women are often a minority of members and the group uses majority rule to make its decisions," Mendelberg said. "These settings will produce a dramatic inequality in women's floor time and in many other ways. Women are less likely to be viewed and to view themselves as influential in the group and to feel that their 'voice is heard.'"

For their experiments, Karpowitz and Mendelberg recruited people to be part of a group and discuss the best way to distribute money they earned together from a hypothetical task. In all, the researchers observed 94 groups of at least five people.

On average, groups deliberated for 25 minutes before settling the matter. Participants voted by secret ballot, but half of the groups followed majority rule while the other half decided only with a unanimous vote.

Notably, the groups arrived at different decisions depending on women's participation -- swinging the group's stance on the level of generosity given to the lowest member of the group.

"When women participated more, they brought unique and helpful perspectives to the issue under discussion," Karpowitz said. "We're not just losing the voice of someone who would say the same things as everybody else in the conversation."
