Small businesses willing to dump iPad, Android tablets for Surface ...

The Surface RT has been revealed, launched, and fondled by reviewers around the globe. Pre-orders are shipping to customers, and Microsoft?s first home-grown PC is now starting to make its presence felt in the real world. Partner?s tablets like the Ativ Smart PC and Vivo Tab are on their way, too. There are still plenty of questions to be answered, of course, like whether or not Windows 8 and RT tablets really stands a chance against the iPad.

In the small business world, the answer seems to be a resounding ?yes.?

According to a new study conducted by iYogi Insights, SMBs are very interested in what Windows 8 tablets have to offer ? so much so that many are considering switching. 38% of business owners polled said they were pondering ditching their iPads and moving to an alternative that runs Windows 8. Those who own Android tablets are slightly more interested, with 45% saying they might make the switch.

Compatibility is the key. To small business owners, there?s no comparison between ?Office compatible? and full-on Microsoft Office. Every Windows RT tablet or convertible that hits retail shelves will include Office 2013, and x86-based tablets running Windows 8 can run the entire Office suite, too. That?s a major selling point to business owners who still lean heavily on apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook for their day-to-day operations.

IT budgets are generally tight at SMBs, and that means they?re looking to stretch technology dollars as far as they can. If Windows 8 and RT devices can find the pricing sweet spot, it looks like they can easily muscle their way in to the business sector.

If you?re a business owner considering a tablet switch, make sure you factor a possible Office 2013 license into your budget.?Windows RT ships with Office 2013 Home and Student ? which isn?t licensed for profit-making uses. That means SMBs need to have a package like Office 2013 Home and Business to legitimize its use, which could add another $249 per tablet. You can also buy a $349 1 user, 2 device license that will cover both a desktop installation and second screen like a Surface RT.
